Changelog

July 31, 2026

UI improvements, and performance work to smoothly support (even) larger repositories with 300k+ changed files.

New

  • Commit message drafts are kept per repository and restored when you switch back.
  • File filter boxes have a clear button, and Ctrl+F to focus.
  • A new setting to switch between exact and fuzzy matching in file filters.
  • License activation and deactivation in Settings.

Improved

  • Large and high-resolution displays: pane layout and scrolling adapt to window size.
  • Renamed files read and report their stats correctly.
  • Status writes refreshed stat information back into the index when content is unchanged, the way git status does, so files touched by other tools are not re-hashed on every later status. This makes Git Cherry Tree play nicer with other tools.

Performance

  • File Diff loading is significantly faster in larger repositories.
  • Staging stays smooth with 300,000 changed files shown at once, up from 100,000.
  • Parallel LFS pointer probing and amortized attribute sweeps: repositories with hundreds of thousands of LFS files open much faster.
  • Git handles are pooled across reads, and file-stat batches prune to the selected paths.
  • Reorder and squash are faster on larger repositories.

0.3.0

internal build

June 20, 2026

A complete rewrite of the UI in Rust, and the first Linux build! Also image diffs!

New

  • Merge branches: any branch into any other, producing a true two-parent merge commit. Conflicts pause the operation for resolution and resume from your decision, a dirty working directory blocks the merge instead of corrupting it, and the whole merge is one undo/redo step.
  • Merge commits expand in place in the commit list, showing which commits came in through the merge.
  • Graph pane: branch topology as a multi-column tree, with a drag-reorderable branch-chip header whose leftmost chip sets the comparison base.
  • Image diffs: before and after side by side over a transparency checkerboard.
  • Git LFS badges in the staging list (object present, missing, or misconfigured), and previews of the actual LFS content in the diff pane instead of pointer text.
  • The first Linux build. A software-rendering fallback keeps the client working on machines without Vulkan.
  • Auto-updates for paid licenses. The updater verifies each download against a signature before installing, and refuses anything that fails verification or is not strictly newer.
  • Optional setup: copy the client into a folder of your choice, with a Desktop shortcut and Start Menu entry. Without it, the client keeps running portable as before.
  • New UI features and settings for them: cursor trail, breathing caret, animation speed (down to zero), and a DPI multiplier on top of the OS scale.
  • Syntax highlighting covers more languages, roughly 30.
  • Remove a repository from the repo switcher; full author, date, and hash tooltips on commit rows.

Improved

  • Icons and overlays are drawn from signed distance fields, so they stay sharp at any scale.
  • Diff view visuals: clearer line roles and gutters.
  • Saved settings survive version upgrades: unknown fields fall back to defaults instead of discarding the file.

Performance

  • Rendering is roughly 3x faster per frame than the web interface.
  • Large diffs load roughly 3x faster.
  • Faster startup and faster fuzzy search.

April 4, 2026

Adding Git LFS support, pull request detection, worktrees, and more.

  • Squash commits, including undoing a squash.
  • Git LFS support.
  • Worktree support: open worktrees as repositories, with branches marked as checked out elsewhere.
  • Rebindable hotkeys, and full keyboard navigation across the client.
  • SSH remotes and a no-login mode that uses your existing git credentials, so non-GitHub hosts work too.
  • Pull request detection on branches, and auto-fetch when opening a repository.
  • Fixed stale diff and commit state after switching repositories, and merge conflicts involving renamed files.

March 8, 2026

A major release adding many more history manipulation features.

  • Rebase, revert, and reset branch to a ref or to its remote, without needing to check the branch out first.
  • Undo/redo across write operations, including conflict resolutions, submodules, and continued operations.
  • Hotkeys and a command palette.
  • In-memory merge conflict handling.
  • Background repository maintenance, and auto-pruning fetch with progress reporting.
  • Push with lease in place of force push, so you only overwrite what you expect to.
  • Commit and checkout pipeline moved onto gitoxide.

January 7, 2026

A complete rewrite of the diff viewer as a custom virtualized list.

  • Syntax highlighting, and character-level diffing within changed lines.
  • Flicker-free rendering of million-line files.
  • Faster handling of very large selections.
  • Changed-line headers, and long-line truncation with expansion.

December 29, 2025

The very first public release of Git Cherry Tree.

  • A gitoxide-backed status implementation with a faster dirty-workspace check.
  • Fixed rebasing and reordering around merge commits, and commit drag operations that did not always complete.
